Open source is something people can modify and share because its design is publicly accessible and free to use. Typically this term is used for computer programs but here at BOTL Farm we use it more generally to include software, design documents for physically built products, and other documentation.

Some hallmarks of open source projects:

  • Source code is publicly available
  • Often developed by a community of volunteers
  • Anyone can use, modify, and distribute the software
  • Promotes collaboration and transparency
  • Free if you can host it yourself
